Everybody heard the alleged phone conversation that went viral recently, where the Imo State Governorship Candidate of Labour Party, Chief Athan Achonu, was alleged to have collected $1million from the Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to assist him win the Labour Party primaries.I don't know what you want to believe, but if it was true, did Hope Uzodimma do anything different from what any smart politician would have done?
The issue of giving money to party delegates has become an ugly trend in this country and did not start from Athan Achonu or Hope Uzodimma, if indeed, they gave money to any delegates in the first place.
To become delegate of political parties, especially the big ones with deep pocketed aspirants, have become a most have opportunity and people fight and bribe just to be delegates.
In 2015, the amount of money given to delegates to sway their votes was so much that many of them bought cars and lands after the exercise.
A certain desperate politician then even made delegates swear oaths for him before giving them his money.
Even the make of the Labour Party delegates wasn't bribery free as many of the party members paid to lobby their way to become delegates in expectation of the money they will make there.
So why is it an issue, if Gov Hope Uzodimma helped out his old friend, Chief Athan Achonu, with some money to help him in his quest to get the opportunity of facing in at the General Elections?
One thing you have to understand is that beyond politics, all these men are friends, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with anyone of them, giving money to the other.
What if the money allegedly given was payment for a property the governor was buying from Athan?
If indeed money was given, if could be for anything and even if it was for the purpose of the Labour Party primaries, for me, it shows how smart Uzodimma is as he has constantly outsmarted all his opponents at every turn.
Many of them shouting now especially those in the opposition parties would probably have been kicking themselves at their behind why they didn't think of it in the first place.
Suddenly, all of them who have at one time or the other, bought delegates, are now claiming holier than though because they were outsmarted in the game.
